The adventures of a lurcher in the Scottish capital

Notes from Copenhagen

When you live almost anywhere else in the world - except perhaps the Netherlands - Copenhagen seems like the model city for transport and getting about. The Metro takes you directly from the airport into the city centre in 15 mins. All the public transport is integrated. I couldn't get over it when I pressed the button to translate the Metro ticket machine and there was a special ticket for dogs. On close inspection of my Metro leaflet (in English, I don't speak more Danish than yes/no/two beers please/thanks ) I learn that small dogs in bags go free (so a hypothetical attack chihuahua guarding my passport would have travelled FREE). All other dogs have to buy their own ticket. Dogs can sit anywhere except the front or end of the train, which is reserved for people with allergies. When I say they can sit anywhere, I don't think they mean on the seats.

Everyone in Copenhagen seems to cycle. Like the Dutch, the Danes pedal around on stately bikes in their everyday clothes. Sometimes dogs trot alongside, on and off-lead. Some dogs sit in a basket on the handlebars, and others sit in the very exciting Danish trikes. None of my pictures came out, but I honestly did see sights like these.

I also snapped a shiba inu dozing in a designer knitwear shop window. I wonder when the shop owner realised the merchandise was being used as a pillow?

Even sillier poodles in a department store window display ...

Rather nobler were the hounds guarding the Radhus (town hall).

Back in Edinburgh again now. "There's no place like home! There's no place like home!"

How wonderful that Copenhagen is so dog friendly!! I wish dogs were allowed to travel on trains here, Los Angeles and the US, I'd take the train all the time!!

We love pet friendly cities, and are so grateful to live in one ... dogs are welcome in most shops - in the bank - and at the outside seating of all the restaurants and bars. Just not on the beach, in the interest of keeping things CLEAN. Most of the dog owners are very attentive to being responsible (with poo bags in hand) but there are always THOSE ...

Pic of Jake with insane toothy grin

Jake is a black & tan lurcher, adopted from Edinburgh Dog & Cat Home in August 2004. He now lives the life of Riley in a leafy suburb of Edinburgh. His interests include agility, running like the wind, enticing other dogs to chase him, fellow sighthounds Molly & Steve, squirrels, swans, plush swans, swans on telly, Portobello beach, the Edinburgh hills, sofas, & snoozing.

Jake wears Earth Dog hemp collars from Mango Mutt. His collar tag (compliant with KC agility regs) is from the excellent Indigo Collar Tags.
